Your body is changing. And perhaps you’re wondering what on earth is going on. Let’s talk about perimenopause, Ayurveda and how to support your health through this transition.

Are you feeling that something is off, different, or changing?

You’ve always been a good sleeper, but suddenly you find yourself wide awake at 3 AM, wondering why your brain has decided it’s the perfect time to think about absolutely everything.

You’re noticing more joint pain, gaining a few kilograms without really changing your diet, feeling exhausted despite sleeping eight hours, or experiencing anxiety and mood swings that seem to come out of nowhere.

And then there are those moments when you walk into a room and completely forget why you went there.

Sound familiar?

Well, welcome to the hormonal rollercoaster that we call perimenopause.

No, you’re not necessarily losing your mind. And no, you don’t have to simply accept feeling miserable because you’re getting older.

But something is changing, and I believe it’s time we women start understanding these changes instead of ignoring them.

What Is Perimenopause, and When Does It Start?

Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause. It commonly begins in our 40s, although some women notice changes in their late 30s.

During this time, our ovaries gradually change how they function. Ovulation becomes less predictable, progesterone production can become more irregular, and oestrogen levels may fluctuate significantly before eventually declining.

And when I say fluctuate, I mean a proper rollercoaster ride.

One month you feel wonderful, energetic, confident and completely yourself. The next month, you wonder who this woman in the mirror is.

Perimenopause can last several years, and every woman experiences it differently.

Menopause itself is reached when you’ve gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, provided there isn’t another reason for your periods to have stopped.

And here’s something important: perimenopause and menopause are not diseases. They are natural biological transitions.

However, natural doesn’t mean that we have to suffer through them.

Why Are So Many Women Still Unprepared for Perimenopause?

This is something that continues to surprise me.

We spend decades menstruating, perhaps taking contraception, dealing with pregnancies or deciding not to have children, and then suddenly we’re approaching our 40s.

But how many women genuinely understand what’s happening inside their bodies during this next chapter?

We know our periods will eventually stop. Fine.

But what about the years leading up to that moment?

The changes in sleep, metabolism, body composition, mood, sexual health, relationships and sometimes even our sense of identity?

For far too long, women’s hormonal health has been discussed as if it were something we should quietly tolerate.

And I think we can do better than that.

As an Ayurveda & Longevity Coach working with women 40+, I see how important it is to understand our bodies before we reach the point of complete exhaustion, frustration or disconnection.

Because this transition isn’t only about reproductive hormones.

It’s also an opportunity to look at how we’ve been living, what our bodies need now, and how we want to age.

Common Perimenopause Symptoms: What Is Your Body Trying to Tell You?

Perimenopause can affect women physically, mentally and emotionally.

Some women barely notice the transition, while others experience symptoms that significantly affect their daily lives.

Common symptoms and changes include:

Changes in menstrual cycles, including heavier, lighter or irregular periods

Difficulty falling asleep or waking during the night

Hot flashes and night sweats

Brain fog, forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating

Increased anxiety, irritability or mood swings

Fatigue and changes in energy levels

Joint pain, muscle aches and stiffness

Weight gain or changes in fat distribution, particularly around the abdomen

Vaginal dryness, discomfort or changes in libido

Heart palpitations

Changes in skin and hair

Not every symptom is caused by hormones, though.

Thyroid conditions, iron deficiency, sleep disorders, metabolic health issues and other medical conditions can create similar symptoms.

That’s why I encourage women to stop guessing and start investigating when something doesn’t feel right.

Understanding your body is not about becoming obsessed with every symptom.

It’s about becoming more aware, asking better questions and making informed decisions about your health.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://nancyhuettig.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Menstrual-Awareness-workshop-online-1600-x-900-px.png” title_text=”Perimenopause After 40:” _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” width=”80%” max_width=”80%” module_alignment=”center” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.9″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Perimenopause Through the Eyes of Ayurveda

Now, let’s bring Ayurveda into the picture.

Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine and way of living, teaches us to understand the body as a constantly changing system influenced by our environment, lifestyle, nutrition, age and individual constitution.

One of its central principles is that life moves through different stages.

According to Ayurveda, these stages are associated with the three Doshas:

Kapha, Pitta and Vata.

Kapha represents structure, stability and nourishment. Pitta represents transformation, metabolism and heat. Vata represents movement, communication and change.

As we move towards the later stages of life, Vata becomes increasingly influential.

And what does Vata represent?

Movement. Irregularity. Dryness. Change.

Does that sound familiar?

From an Ayurvedic perspective, the transition towards menopause can be understood as a time when Vata-related qualities become more noticeable.

We may experience irregular sleep, dryness, digestive changes, anxiety, restlessness or a feeling of being less grounded.

However, not every woman experiences the same pattern.

Some women may notice more Pitta-related qualities, such as heat, irritability and hot flashes. Others may experience more Kapha-related qualities, such as heaviness, sluggishness and changes in body weight.

This is where Ayurveda becomes particularly interesting.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach.

Your constitution, current imbalances, lifestyle, environment and health history all matter.

And while Ayurvedic Doshas are traditional concepts rather than modern medical diagnoses, they can offer a useful framework for reflecting on our individual needs.

Ayurveda Meets Modern Longevity: Supporting Your Body After 40

One thing I appreciate about Ayurveda is its strong focus on prevention.

Rather than waiting until the body is completely out of balance, Ayurveda encourages us to pay attention to our daily habits.

And modern longevity science increasingly highlights the importance of many of these foundations: nutrition, movement, sleep, metabolic health and stress management.

For me, these approaches don’t need to compete.

We can respect ancient wisdom while also using modern scientific knowledge to make informed decisions.

Here are some of the areas I focus on when supporting women through perimenopause and healthy aging.

1. Nutrition: Nourish Your Body Instead of Fighting It

Our nutritional needs change as we age.

And yet, so many women respond to weight gain during perimenopause by eating less, skipping meals or jumping onto another restrictive diet.

But is that really what your body needs?

I encourage women to focus on nourishment, not punishment.

This includes adequate protein to support muscle maintenance, healthy fats, fibre-rich foods and a variety of vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, warm, freshly prepared, easily digestible meals can be particularly supportive for women experiencing Vata-related digestive discomfort or irregularity.

Healthy fats such as olive oil, nuts, seeds and, where suitable, ghee can be part of a balanced diet.

Foods containing phytoestrogens, such as soy and flaxseeds, may also have a place in a healthy eating pattern, although they are not a replacement for medical treatment when needed.

And let’s not forget something I believe deserves much more attention during perimenopause.

Blood sugar regulation.

Changes in body composition, sleep, activity and insulin sensitivity can influence our metabolic health as we age.

Understanding how your body responds to food, stress, sleep and movement can be valuable, especially if you’re struggling with energy fluctuations, cravings or abdominal weight gain.

The goal isn’t to fear carbohydrates or chase perfectly flat glucose curves.

It’s to build better metabolic health for the years ahead.

2. Strength Training: Your Muscles Are a Longevity Investment

I love yoga. I’ve practised and taught it for many years.

But if there’s one thing I want women over 40 to understand, it’s this:

Please don’t forget your muscles.

As we age, maintaining muscle mass and strength becomes increasingly important for metabolic health, bone health, mobility and independence.

And yes, that means resistance training.

Not only gentle stretching or walking.

Lift weights. Challenge your muscles. Build strength progressively and give your body enough recovery time.

You don’t have to become a bodybuilder.

But I personally want to be able to carry my own suitcase when I’m 75.

And that doesn’t happen by accident.

Yoga, walking, mobility exercises and cardiovascular activity remain valuable, but resistance training deserves a permanent place in our routines.

3. Sleep: When Your Nights Suddenly Change

Sleep disturbances are among the most frustrating changes women experience during perimenopause.

Perhaps you’ve always slept well, and suddenly you’re waking up at 3 AM, unable to fall back asleep.

Hormonal fluctuations, night sweats, stress, changes in sleep regulation and other health factors may all contribute.

And sometimes several things are happening at once.

This is why I encourage women to look beyond simply taking another sleep supplement.

Consider your evening routine, caffeine intake, meal timing, stress levels, sleep environment and whether symptoms such as night sweats or sleep apnoea could be disturbing your rest.

Blood sugar fluctuations may also play a role in sleep for some people, although waking at 3 AM does not automatically mean you’re experiencing a glucose crash.

Ayurveda places great importance on Dinacharya, our daily routine.

Regular sleeping and waking times, consistent meals, appropriate activity and a calming evening routine can create a sense of stability.

And during a phase when so much is changing internally, that stability can be valuable.

4. Your Nervous System: Stop Living in Constant Survival Mode

Many women reach their 40s after decades of doing, achieving, caring, working, managing and putting everyone else’s needs first.

And then they wonder why they feel exhausted.

Well, perhaps it’s time to look at how we’re living.

Our nervous system responds to our daily experiences, stress levels, sleep and overall health.

And hormonal changes may influence how we experience stress and emotional regulation.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, calming excessive Vata involves creating more grounding, regularity and nourishment.

This might include meditation, breathwork, spending time in nature, yoga, mindful movement or simply allowing ourselves more moments of rest.

But nervous system regulation is not another task to squeeze into an already overloaded schedule.

Sometimes the most important change is learning to say no.

Setting boundaries.

Resting without feeling guilty.

And recognising that being constantly busy isn’t necessarily a sign of a successful life.

5. Ayurvedic Herbs and Treatments: Personalisation Matters

Ayurveda offers a wide range of herbs and traditional therapies that have been used to support women’s health and general well-being.

Depending on the individual, Ayurvedic practitioners may consider herbal preparations, oil massage (Abhyanga), self-massage or other traditional practices.

I particularly appreciate Abhyanga, the Ayurvedic practice of oil massage, as a way to slow down, reconnect with the body and support relaxation.

However, natural doesn’t automatically mean safe.

Herbal products may interact with medication, vary in quality or be unsuitable for certain health conditions.

And scientific evidence for many Ayurvedic herbs specifically treating perimenopause symptoms remains limited.

That’s why I don’t believe in recommending the same supplement to every woman simply because she’s over 40.

Individual assessment matters.

6. Healthy Aging: Think Beyond Your Next Period

Perimenopause isn’t only about managing symptoms today.

It’s also a valuable time to look at our long-term health.

Bone density, muscle strength, cardiovascular health, blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose regulation and sleep all deserve attention as we move through midlife.

This doesn’t mean you need to run every possible laboratory test.

It means discussing appropriate health assessments with a qualified healthcare professional based on your age, symptoms, medical history and risk factors.

For women over 45, perimenopause can often be identified through symptoms and menstrual changes without routine hormone testing. Individual hormone levels fluctuate and a single test may not tell the whole story.

Other investigations may be useful when symptoms suggest a different condition or when there are specific health concerns.

For me, longevity isn’t about chasing the idea of looking 25 forever.

It’s about having the strength, energy, mobility and mental clarity to enjoy our lives as we get older.

And the foundations for that are built through what we do consistently.

Not through another quick fix.

Perimenopause Is Also a Time to Reconnect With Yourself

There is another part of this transition that deserves attention.

Our identity.

For many women, the 40s bring questions that go far beyond hormones.

Am I happy with the life I’m living?

What do I actually want?

Why am I still doing things that no longer feel right?

Where have I been putting everyone else’s needs before my own?

Not every emotional change in midlife is caused by hormones.

Sometimes we’re simply becoming more aware of what no longer fits.

And I think that deserves space, too.

Ayurveda teaches us to recognise change as part of life rather than something we constantly need to resist.

That doesn’t mean accepting symptoms without seeking support.

It means learning to work with our changing bodies while taking responsibility for our health and well-being.

You Don’t Have to Navigate Perimenopause Alone

Perimenopause is a natural transition, but your experience of it is individual.

And there is no single perfect diet, supplement, exercise routine or wellness protocol that works for every woman.

What matters is understanding your body, recognising what needs attention and building habits that support you now and in the years ahead.

Sometimes that means adjusting your lifestyle.

Sometimes it means working with a menopause-informed healthcare professional and discussing medical treatment options, including hormone therapy when appropriate.

And sometimes it means having someone help you look at the bigger picture.

Because healthy aging isn’t about fighting age. It’s about learning how to support the woman you’re becoming.

Ready to Understand Your Body and Take the Next Step?

I’m Nancy, an Ayurveda & Longevity Coach supporting women 40+ through perimenopause and healthy aging.

I combine traditional Ayurvedic principles with modern longevity knowledge and practical lifestyle coaching, looking at the bigger picture of your sleep, nutrition, metabolic health, movement, nervous system and daily habits.

No quick fixes. Even though you've always been a good sleeper, it's difficult to get a good night's sleep. You're noticing more joint pain, gaining a few kilograms without knowing why, feeling fatigued and more tired than usual, or experiencing personality changes, increased anxiety, and changes in your menstruation. Good news, you are not losing your mind; you could be experiencing Perimenopause.

Perimenopause is the phase before menopause, typically starting in a woman’s late 30s or early 40s, and spanning approximately 7-10 years before the onset of menopause. The ovaries are gradually slowing down oestrogen and progesterone production, giving oestrogen a few wild roller coaster rides up and down before hitting the brakes. This hormonal whirlwind can usher in a host of physical and emotional symptoms – depression, anxiety, brain fog, sadness, feeling different, disconnection, and stress. Neither perimenopause or menopause is a disease; they are natural stages in a woman’s life involving significant hormonal changes. These changes can be overwhelming if you are not aware of perimenopause.

Societal Awareness and Misconceptions

Many women are often unaware of the realities of perimenopause and menopause, sometimes not realising their symptoms are linked to this natural stage of womanhood. The lack of awareness stems from societal issues where women’s health, particularly hormonal changes, are not openly discussed enough. Women are often aware that menstruation will eventually stop, but they are less informed about the transition period leading up to it. As an Ayurvedic lifestyle practitioner and therapist, I’ve noticed that this leaves many women feeling confused and isolated, leading to disconnection with their partner, family, children, and friends.

Symptoms and Preparation

During perimenopause, you may notice symptoms like hair fall, arthritis, sleep issues, heart palpitations, changes in cholesterol levels, unexplained weight gain, body aches, allergies, digestive problems, joint pain, frequent urination, mood swings, menstrual cycle changes, panic attacks, anxiety, and fuzzy thinking. From an Ayurvedic perspective, perimenopause marks the entry into the Vata phase of life, responsible for movement and transportation in the body, as well as for degeneration and ageing. Ayurveda understands the human body and universe through the three Doshas known as Vata, Pitta, Kapha, and five elements: air, ether, fire, water, earth. The symptoms you experience could be dominated by Vata, Pitta, or Kapha, and treatments are tailored accordingly. Rest assured, these symptoms will pass; they're simply part of the transition.

Ayurveda, one of the oldest holistic medical systems, teaches us to better understand ourselves with the primary goal of prevention. For thousands of years, this science of life and way of living has effectively helped women combat these issues. Vata Dosha in this context signifies a time of increased mobility and change, requiring grounding and stabilisation through diet and lifestyle practices.

Remedies and Practical Tips

Ayurveda supports a holistic approach, facilitating a smoother transition through this stage and into menopause.

Diet and Nutrition: Maintain a balanced diet that includes food sources of Omega-3 fats and other healthy fats –such as ghee, avocado, nuts, seeds, sprouts, organic meats (if non-veg), anchovies, legumes, full-fat organic dairy products, olive oil, coconut oil and almond oil. In this phase, Vata finds its best ally in Ghee – clarified butter. Incorporate foods rich in phytoestrogens, such as flaxseeds, soy, and whole grains. Avoid or reduce caffeine, alcohol, and smoking. Instead of spicy foods that may induce hot flashes, opt for warm, nourishing foods to maintain Vata balance.

Herbal Supplements: Ayurveda offers a range of natural remedies to support women’s health during this stage. These herbs should be prescribed after a proper consultation.

Lifestyle Changes: Establish a daily routine (Dinacharya in Ayurveda) that includes regular physical activity, yoga or meditation, and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule. Incorporate gentle exercises such as walking, stretching, and light weight lifting to preserve joint health and flexibility. Avoid over-exercising or exhausting the hormones, as it is crucial to maintain balance.

Hydration: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Vata can induce dryness, so we need to stay smooth.

Treatments & Skin Care: Receiving oil massage (Abhyanga) or self-massage and herbal steam (Svedana) can be beneficial. Use natural oils like sesame or almond oil to keep your skin moisturised and supple.

Stress Management: Managing stress and regulating the nervous system is crucial. Techniques such as mindfulness, deep breathing exercises, and spending time in nature can help reduce stress levels and improve overall well-being.

Community Support and Therapies

Finding a holistic gynaecologist, Ayurvedic therapist, or naturopath to guide you through this transition is essential. Friends and community support groups can also play a crucial role in helping women navigate the changes associated with perimenopause. These communities offer a sense of belonging and reassurance, with the knowledge that others are experiencing similar challenges, making the journey feel less isolating.

Perimenopause is a natural transition experienced uniquely by every woman. Our attitude towards change and ageing is also important during this period, shaping our experience. Embracing these changes allows us to approach life with a deeper understanding and acceptance. Ayurveda encourages us to age gracefully, finding joy and beauty in the wisdom gained through experience. Accepting and embracing this phase with a positive mindset can lead to a greater life of fulfilment and equilibrium.

About Nancy Huettig

Nancy Huettig is an Ayurvedic lifestyle practitioner, educator, therapist, and yoga teacher based in Koh Phangan, Thailand.
